This file is intended to be a brief introduction to the build  This file (UPDATING) is intended to be a brief reference to recent
process and a reference on what to do if something doesn't work.  changes that might cause problems in the build process, and a guide for
what to do if something doesn't work.

For a more detailed description of the recommended way to build NetBSD
using build.sh, see the BUILDING file.

Note that much of the advice in this UPDATING file was written before

 20020917:  20090126:
USE_NEW_TOOLCHAIN has been replaced with:          The posix_fadvise system call changed assembly stub type. You need to
             -   TOOLCHAIN_MISSING -- set to "yes" on platforms for which          'rm -f posix_fadvise.*' in the libc build directory to avoid using
there is no working in-tree toolchain (hppa, ns32k, sh5,          the old assembly stub.
                 x86_64).
             -   EXTERNAL_TOOLCHAIN -- if defined by the user, points to the  20090202:
root ofan external toolchain (e.g. /usr/local/gnu).  This          pkg_install now depends on the pkgdb cache for automatic conflict
enables the cross-build framework even for TOOLCHAIN_MISSING          detection.  It is recommented to rebuild the cache with
                 platforms.          ``pkg_admin rebuild''.

 20020906:  20090110:
gehenna-devsw has been merged into the trunk. Need to update and          time_t and dev_t have been bumped to 64 bit quantities. To upgrade:
reinstall usr.sbin/config before build the kernel.          1. Make sure your kernel has COMPAT_50 in it. Build and install.
This is needed even in the MODULAR kernel because there is
20020822:             conditionally compiled code in rtsock.c.
Crunched rescue tools (contents of /bin and /sbin, plus others)          2. make sure build.sh completes and the binaries in a chroot work
are now provided in /rescue.             before installing.
           3. If you don't use build.sh and you build directly to root, and
To ensure that these are built statically linked (no matter             your build breaks in the middle, don't despair. Make sure headers
what the setting of LDSTATIC is), use a crunchgen(1) built             are installed properly, and start building libraries first libc
from sources newer than 20020820 (see the next entry).             and libutil, install them and then continue building all the
libraries in src/lib and src/gnu/lib and install them. Once
20020820:             the new libraries are installed, you can restart the build.
crunchgen(1) changed to ensure that the generated program          4. If you compile packages and you notice link time warnings,
is statically linked.             rebuild the required packages to update their shared libraries.
Any package you rebuild will require rebuilding all the packages
Solution: update and reinstall usr.bin/crunch             that depend on it.

will not let you log in (with default, or UsePrivlegeSeparation=yes)             lastlogx(5)) have been versioned, and there is a heuristic
for utmp. You are better off removing the old files after
Add the following into /etc/group:             upgrading.  The automated clearing of /var/run during

20020426:          config(1) has been updated, and one of the files it creates -
NBUILDJOBS obsoleted in favor of just using -j.          swapnetbsd.o - has changed format.  You need to rebuild config

etc/postinstall added, which performs various checks for          kernels.

         the problems identified.  20081205:
This should make it much easier to upgrade a system's          If you build with MKX11=no, you should remove /etc/rc.d/xdm and
configuration from earlier systems (as far back as NetBSD 1.5).          /etc/rc.d/xfs from DESTDIR because those files were moved to the xetc
set and will appear as extra files for MKX11=no update builds.
 20020320:
         <bsd.lib.mk> needs a new install(1) for it's "-a cmd" support.  20081122:
build and install at usr.bin/xinstall before the build.          On i386, various kernel options(4) in GENERIC including
file systems have been disabled and moved into kernel modules.
20020319:          Before trying a new GENERIC kernel, you have to prepare the
raw IPv6 socket now makes strict checking for sa_family and sa_len          following files as well as a new GENERIC kernel:
on send(2) operation.  be sure to have sbin/rtsol and usr.sbin/rtsold

20020311:          - install the latest bootloader, which will load a module
ssh configuration files were moved from /etc to /etc/ssh.  Beware            for the file system from which the kernel is loaded automatically
if you restart your machine from remote.  Note that sshd.conf needs
to be changed (due to the use of "/etc" inside).          If you have to load your kernel from a file system which is not of
the same type as the root file system, you have to load the necessary
20020223:          file system module manually on the boot prompt or in the boot.cfg file.
Users of the VAX port will need to rebuild and install gas
so it deal with the now present register prefix used in all  20080827:
the VAX assembly files.          If you built and installed a libc from sources between
           2008/08/20 and 2008/08/26 you got a broken strtouq(3)
20020118:          which results in false errors reported by lint(1).
Since this breaks the libc build itself, manual help is
ntpd user/group has been added.  Need to hand add this in or builds          needed -- lint must be disabled temporarily, e.g.:
will break as mtree aborts early.            $ (cd lib/libc && make MKLINT=no dependall install)

Add the following into /etc/group:  20080813:
MKDEBUG build was broken because the .depend files did not know
ntpd:*:15:          about .go files. You need to remove all .depend files and rebuild.

and the following to /etc/master.passwd (via vipw):  20080731:
WAPBL (metadata journaling support) has been added, but at this
ntpd:*:15:15::0:0:Ntpd pseudo-user:/var/chroot/ntpd:/sbin/nologin          time isn't backwards compatible with pre-WAPBL aware kernels
and userland (fsck_ffs in particular).  Please make sure you
20011207:          don't use a journaled filesystem with an older kernel/userland,
especially an uncleanly mounted journaled filesystem.  WAPBL
If you're attempting to build a snapshot on sparc64 and are getting          also requires the super block to be in the UFS2 format.  You
reloc errors from the toolchain groff binary this means your native          can use fsck_ffs -c 4 to update the superblock format.
toolchain has some broken C++ bits.
   20080721:
To fix:          Assembler warnings are now fatal if $WARNS>0 and $NOGCCERROR
           isn't defined.
         Build a new toolchain (i.e. build.sh -t)
Use the new toolchain to build and install natively (i.e. /usr/lib)  20080531:
The ioctl number of DRVSUSPENDDEV command on /dev/drvctl changed
gnu/lib/libgcc          from 125 (conflicted with DRVCTLCOMMAND) to 129. The drvctl(8)
gnu/lib/libstdc++          utility needs to be rebuilt and reinstalled as older binaries
won't work correctly. The following sequence of commands:
After this a snapshot will be able to be built.
             $ (cd sys/sys/ && nbmake-$arch includes)
 20011201:            $ (cd sbin/drvctl/ && nbmake-$arch clean)
In order for a sparc64 build to work you must have a working awk. If            $ (cd sbin/drvctl/ && nbmake-$arch all)
you've built and installed a system with the new toolchain up to this
point you do not have a working awk as its ability to do floating          leaves new drvctl utility in sbin/drvctl build directory.
         point is broken.
   20080503:
To build:          The <bsd.lib.mk> variable MKPRIVATELIB was renamed to LIBISPRIVATE.

         remake and install gnu/lib/libgcc  20080521:
remake and install gnu/usr.bin/gawk into /usr/bin (make sure it links          For a while, unprivileged UPDATE builds would fail to
against the new libgcc.a)          succeed at the checkflist stage, complaining that
${DESTDIR}/stand/<arch>/ did not exist.  A fix for this
20011128:          problem was committed to share/mk/bsd.kmodule.mk, revision 1.9.
Kernel config information was changed to use defflag in          If you already hit this problem, update the .mk file,
the various "files" files.  Bug fixes to config(8) are          remove ${DESTDIR}/stand/<arch>, and re-run the build.
required in order for this to work properly.  Make sure
to build and install in usr.sbin/config before attempting  20080303:
to build a new kernel.          Linker warnings are now fatal if $WARNS>0.

 20011030:  20080126:
libc/locale/wcstod.c now needs new lint(1). Update lint(1)          The posix_fadvise system call has been changed from an assembly
before building libc.          stub, to a c file that calls an assembly stub. You need to
'rm -f posix_fadvise.* .depend' in the libc build directory to
20011029:          avoid using the old assembly stub.
The new document BUILDING.mdoc (view with nroff | more, or
see pre-generated .txt and .html versions) describes the build  20071209:

Users building a USE_NEW_TOOLCHAIN system should read the  20071115:

src/etc/Makefile now needs install to be able to handle
symlinks that point to nowhere. A bug in install that  20071028:
prevented this was corrected.          The pccons(4) driver has been removed from the NetBSD/shark port.
You need to update any custom kernel configuration file you have
Solution: update and reinstall usr.bin/xinstall          to remove any references to pccons (which includes removing the

           for more details.
 20011006:
/etc/mtree/NetBSD.dist has been updated to take advantage of  20070913:
absolute path support added to mtree(8). Older mtree(8)s don't          A latent bug in dhclient/dhcpd that caused it to be unable to

Solution: update and reinstall usr.sbin/mtree          implementation was repaired.  From 20070529 to 20070911 racoon

 20010915:  20070703:

Solution: "make cleandir && make dependall" in affected  20070422:

grep.info is now built from grep.texi using makeinfo.  Since it          root. One side effect is that absolute symlinks inside the emulated

This might affect symlinks that have been added to reference outside

(i386 only): i386 kernel now uses new instructions like
`fxsave' which old gas doesn't understand.  To build the  20070412:
kernel successfully, you need to build and install a new toolchain,          The pckbc driver on sgimips IP32 has been removed. Use macekbc

Also, PRINTOBJDIR has changed and is now used more heavily.

 20001019:
The `ca' device driver has been replaced by `ld'; although the
major and minor numbers haven't changed, you should update your /dev

 20000929:
The following make directives are obsoleted.
         MKCRYPTO_RSA NOCRYPTO_RSA NOCRYPTO_RC5 NOCRYPTO_IDEA
By default, RSA is built into libcrypto.  IDEA and RC5 will not be
